The Sustainable Rural Production Program began in 2000 under Professor Abdon Schmitt, Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) guidance, with buffalo herd management based on sustainability principles. Other actions are developed such as agroforestry, a task forces for vegetable gardens, productive landscaping and organic beekeeping.
This program among other objectives, seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of organic production as alternative livelihood and income for small farmers in the region. The program is part of efforts for the formation and consolidation of networks of producers.
